Lilongwe- Tuesday, 2nd August, 2021.
The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) welcomes government’s decision to constitute the Councils given that the appointments were long overdue after the commencement date of 4th May 2021 was gazetted. We are confident that the appointees will contribute to the establishment, operations, and development of the higher education sector, in general and in UNIMA (Act No.

Every few years, Global Partnership for Education (GPE) through the Global Education Summit mobilizes resources from donors to replenish its fund and be able to give every child a quality education. The upcoming Summit presents an ambitious commitment by donors to help the GPE to reach its target of at least $5 billion over 5 years. Therefore, the GPE’s financing campaigns are an opportunity to raise resources needed to implement the partnership’s strategy (2021 -2015) and to increase global education financing so that SDG 4 can be achieved.
Whilst commending Malawi government’s participation in this…
On April 26 2020, Lezita Lefani held her head high as she went back to Kanongola Primary School in Salima — two years after she dropped out of school.
In 2019, the 17 year old from Kanonogola Village, Traditional Authority Mwanza in the same district became pregnant at fifteen causing her to put a halt to her education.
“It’s funny how I didn’t know at the time that this [getting pregnant] would cost me,” Lezita said woefully. “I didn’t expect to stay home for over two years just thinking about my life.”
But in the darkness of her despair shone…

Before 2020, Michulu Primary School in Salima (Kanongola Zone, Traditional Authority Mwanza) faced a myriad of challenges when it came to implementing and managing the School Improvement Grant (SIG) that they received from the government.
In an ideal situation the grant, which was introduced in 2007, is meant to directly support schools to realise the outcomes of the school improvement plans (SIP). It was introduced to support the 1998 decentralization policy which among other things was meant to bring services closer to the right holders.
Through this…

Collaborative Efforts in Handling the Readmission Crisis

In 2020 alone Malawi registered over thirty thousand cases of early marriages and teenage pregnancies, during the five-month school closure that the government imposed to curb the spread of corona virus leaving girls in precarious situations all across the country. One such unfortunate case is that of a girl under the fictitious name of Tiwonge.
School closures left girls open to sexual and gender-based violence, teen pregnancies and child marriages. Civil Society Education Coalition’s project, “Improving quality of education and retention of girls and children with disability” which is being funded by IM…

Release: Lilongwe, 7th April, 2021.
The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) wishes to express its deep concerns over the gross failure by government to resolve the ongoing stay away. We note with regret that recent numerous engagements between government and its agencies and the Teachers Union of Malawi have not yielded any positive results to avert the prospective dire consequences of the stay away. Rather, parties involved in the negotiations have not acted in good faith thereby undermining the principles of respect and honesty in any successful dialogue.
The above developments are greatly hurting that students and parents, especially those…
Lilongwe — Tuesday, 9th March, 2021
We, at the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), welcome the decision by the Government and Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) to amicably settle the dispute. We believe that the decision to suspend the stay away pending the determination of the cash equivalent provision of personal protective equipment (PPEs) to teachers is not only progressive but also upholds the right to education of the learners.
While commending the two parties for agreeing on basic principles, we wish to advise them to show restraint in withdrawing from the settlement. In this case, we implore the two…
